More than 100 principals from elementary schoolsfrom Massachusetts to Washington State came together for the CAYL Institute’s innovative July 2009 National Conference, entitled“Young Learners in America’s Schools: What’s in Your Toolkit?”
On October 7, 2008, the CAYL Principals Fellowship in Early Care and Education (a program of the CAYL Institute) convened a meeting with Dr. David Elkind in order to help Boston Public School principals learn developmentally appropriate play and learning practices for the young children in their schools. “Dr. Elkind’s rich and distinguished career informs principals about the importance of play and the perils of ‘pushing down’ the elementary curriculum to preschool,” stated Dr. Valora Washington, President of the CAYL Institute.
The 2008 CAYL Schott Fellows take a tour of the State House and learn the "ABCs of Advocacy" from Maureen Ferris, 2005 CAYL Schott Fellow and Research and Legislative Director for the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities.
In July 2007, the CAYL Principals Fellowship took a trip to the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Conference in Monterey, California.
On July 28, 2008, over 150 people attended a Community Roundtable on Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRIS) in Massachusetts, hosted by the CAYL Schott Fellowship for Early Childhood Care and Education (a program of the CAYL Institute) in conjunction with the state Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).
